Earth Day was instituted to inspire awareness and appreciation for the earth's environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in held on April 22, 1970.
It’s been 40 years since yet the environmental problems we face today are worse than it was then. Climatic changes that are detrimental to species survival are happening globally. Recently, the series of natural catastrophes such as massive flooding, earthquakes and hale storms being experienced worldwide are alarming indications that the planet and our civilization is doomed if we don’t get our acts together to save mother earth. Much has been talked about this issue. Solutions had been proposed. Now is the time to act.
The following is something I kept from childhood memory about how beautiful the world is and the purpose of creation. Then as a child, my appreciation for this poem stops at the eloquence of the words. Now as I read, I found greater meaning in it. In deeper perspective, the unfolding of the beauty and bounty of life are not born out of our sophistication but from our innocence.
As you re-read this nostalgic masterpiece from our childhood, I hope you find some inspiration to do your share, no matter how simple, in saving the world for the future generation.
THE CREATION
By Cecil Frances Alexander
All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors, He made their tiny wings.
The rich man in his castle, the poor man at his gate,
God made thee, highly or lowly, and ordered their estate.
The purple-headed mountain, the river running by,
The sunsets and the mornings, that brightens up the sky.
The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden, He made them everyone.
The tall trees in the greenwood, the meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water we gather everyday.
He gave eyes to see them and lips that we might tell,
How great God Almighty, Who has made all things well!
